Most weeks, the loudest marketing headline and the highest-leverage marketing decision have nothing to do with each other. The headline moves in hours. The decision that actually protects your revenue moves on a slower clock, and it rarely trends.
So I started running the week's headlines through a filter before any of them could reach a roadmap. Every item gets exactly one of three verdicts. Nothing gets a strategy meeting on the strength of a headline alone.
The filter
- IGNORE — hype and panic. Real-sounding, decision-irrelevant. Costs you a meeting and a mood, nothing else.
- WATCH — platform shifts worth monitoring but not yet worth acting on. Put a sensor on it, not a sprint.
- DO — the operational fix hiding underneath the noise. This is where the week's attention should actually go.
This week's brief runs seven headlines through it. In every case the headline is the noise and the third column is the signal. The pattern worth noticing: the fix is almost never the thing the headline is shouting about.
| The headline | Call | What the week is actually about |
|---|---|---|
| Mystery August algorithm update panic | IGNORE | Ranking movement is not a confirmed update. Diagnose query class, landing pages, SERP layout, and conversion impact before you escalate. |
| AI Overviews killed SEO | IGNORE | Click behavior changed; demand did not disappear. Retire rankings-to-clicks and measure visibility, influence, and acquisition as separate KPIs. |
| Being cited by AI means you are winning | IGNORE | A citation is a mention, not a preference. Track citation share, recommendation share, factual accuracy, and downstream conversion. |
| Plant fake Reddit mentions to win AI search | IGNORE | Fake participation is brand risk wearing an SEO costume. Use Reddit for real customer language, objections, and product gaps. |
| Consumers hate AI, so brands should drop it | IGNORE | The objection is to sloppy, hidden, low-quality AI. The fix is governance: consent, provenance, human review, disclosure, quality control. |
| Google Ads volatility is just the algorithm | WATCH | Bid-strategy changes make campaigns follow stale CPA and ROAS targets more literally. Audit budget-limited campaigns against configured targets. |
| Do not react to headlines | DO | React to evidence, business impact, and system-level risk instead. That is the whole discipline in one line. |
The rule underneath all seven: not every headline deserves a strategy meeting. Ignore hype and panic. Watch platform shifts. Do the operational fixes. The executive deck below is the full eight-slide version, built to drop into a leadership standup and settle the "should we be worried about this" conversation in about four minutes.
Eight slides. The seven headlines, each with the why and the focus-instead, plus the closing rule. Yours to present, forward, or save as a PDF.
